Umbra vs. DevUtils
DevUtils is the established, paid, macOS-only alternative to Umbra. Here's how the two compare, checked 2026-09-19.
| Umbra | DevUtils | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free, no account | Paid (perpetual/team licences; exact price not published on its own site as of 2026-09-19) |
| Platforms | macOS (signed, notarized), Windows & Linux (best-effort) | macOS only (10.13+, Intel & Apple Silicon) |
| Tools | 9 | 47+ |
| Source | Source-available (public, All Rights Reserved) | Proprietary — source not published |
| Privacy verification | A documented, repeatable network-monitor check you can run yourself | States "everything you paste into the app never leaves your machine"; no published verification mechanism found as of 2026-09-19 |
| Local AI feature | Yes — offline OCR (Image to Text) | None found as of 2026-09-19 |
DevUtils has far more tools and years of polish on a single platform — if you're macOS-only and don't mind paying, it's a mature, well-regarded choice. It makes almost the same “never leaves your machine” claim Umbra does — but asserts it once, in a sentence, rather than publishing a way to check it. Umbra is free, runs on three platforms instead of one, and ships a local AI feature DevUtils doesn't have as of this writing.
