Umbra vs. DevToys
DevToys is the closest free, open-source comparison to Umbra. Here's how the two compare, checked 2026-09-19.
| Umbra | DevToys | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free, no account | Free |
| Platforms | macOS (signed, notarized), Windows & Linux (best-effort) | Windows, macOS, Linux |
| Tools | 9 | 30 default tools, plus community tools |
| Source | Source-available (public, All Rights Reserved) | Open source (GitHub) |
| Privacy verification | A documented, repeatable network-monitor check you can run yourself | States "privacy-focused"; no published verification mechanism found as of 2026-09-19 |
| Local AI feature | Yes — offline OCR (Image to Text) | None found as of 2026-09-19 |
DevToys has more tools today and is genuinely open source — you can read, modify, and redistribute the code under its licence, which Umbra's source-available status doesn't grant. Where the two differ is verification: DevToys states it's privacy-focused; Umbra publishes a specific, repeatable check — a network monitor, run yourself, described on the home page — that shows what actually happens, tool by tool. Umbra also ships a local AI feature, offline text recognition, that DevToys doesn't have as of this writing.
