Umbra vs. DevTools-X
DevTools-X is the closest structural match to Umbra — also built on Tauri, also cross-platform, also free. Here's how the two compare, checked 2026-09-19.
| Umbra | DevTools-X | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free, no account | Free |
| Platforms | macOS (signed, notarized), Windows & Linux (best-effort) | Windows, macOS, Linux |
| Tools | 9 | ~41 |
| Source | Source-available (public, All Rights Reserved) | Open source (MIT licence) |
| Privacy verification | A documented, repeatable network-monitor check you can run yourself | No published verification mechanism found as of 2026-09-19; its own marketing site is currently offline, so GitHub is its only public front door |
| Local AI feature | Yes — offline OCR (Image to Text) | None found as of 2026-09-19 |
DevTools-X is built the same way Umbra is — a Tauri app, not an Electron one — and has more tools today under a genuinely open MIT licence you can fork and modify. Its own marketing site is currently down, so its GitHub repository is the only place to actually evaluate it. Umbra ships signed, notarized macOS builds, a documented privacy self-check, and a local AI feature DevTools-X doesn't have as of this writing.
